What drove US grid-scale battery storage growth in 2026 (and which American energy storage innovations matter)?

Anyone financing a 2027 storage project is working in an odd market. Installations just hit a record, yet the window to lock in tax credits has narrowed. In January the sourcing rules attached to tax credits got stricter, and data centers have become one of the biggest drivers of new storage demand. Before getting to the American energy storage innovations worth watching, it helps to look at the numbers creating that pressure. In February, the U.S. Energy Information Administration put the 2026 plan at 24 GW of utility-scale batteries. Set that against 2025's 15 GW, already the biggest year on record, and you are looking at a 60% jump in twelve months.
How much US grid-scale battery storage is actually getting built?
Plans slip, so it pays to check the EIA number against what has actually been switched on. Halfway through the year the operating fleet stood at nearly 52 GW, up from 43.6 GW in December. Another 14 GW is expected before year end. If that holds, 2026 finishes around 22 GW, a couple of gigawatts under the plan.
Wood Mackenzie counts storage by energy as well as power, and its Q2 2026 tally broke its own record: 18.9 GWh from 5.4 GW of systems. Nearly all of that energy, 17.6 GWh, came from utility-scale projects.

The Q2 data also shows systems getting longer. Utility-scale megawatts installed in the quarter fell 8% from a year earlier while energy capacity reached a record. Dividing 17.6 GWh by 4.7 GW gives an average of roughly 3.7 hours of storage per utility-scale system installed that quarter. Projects are being built with more hours of storage per megawatt. Utility Dive, covering first-quarter data from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), pointed to a Meta and Enbridge project pairing 365 MW of solar with 200 MW/1.6 GWh of Tesla batteries, designed to discharge at full power for eight hours.
Why data centers are pulling grid-scale battery storage forward
Hyperscalers want power faster than utilities can connect it. In its September outlook, Wood Mackenzie said data center buildout is lifting its US storage forecast across every segment, because storage can provide capacity "faster, cheaper and more reliably than gas alone."
Sometimes the batteries go right on the data center's own land, carrying load until the full grid connection shows up. In other cases they sit somewhere else on the system entirely, and their job is to give the utility enough firm capacity to say yes to a very large new customer.
Raafe Khan of Camelot Energy Group thinks this demand is sturdier than it looks. "Even if data centres were to slow down for whatever reason, I don't think BESS would be as disproportionately impacted as, let's say, gas generation," Raafe Khan of Camelot Energy Group told Energy-Storage.News.
Where US battery storage capacity is being built
Most of this lands in Texas, which by itself accounts for 12.9 GW, or 53% of everything planned nationally. California (3.4 GW) and Arizona (3.2 GW) trail well behind. Put the three together and they hold roughly four out of every five planned gigawatts.
Of the four largest projects due this year, three are in Texas, the 621 MW Lunis Creek BESS among them. Developers tired of fighting for ERCOT and CAISO queue positions may want to keep an eye on Michigan and Georgia, which Wood Mackenzie lists as emerging utility-scale markets.
How incentives and FEOC rules affect large-scale BESS deployment
When the One Big Beautiful Bill Act became law on July 4, 2025, storage kept its investment tax credit. The strings attached to it changed. The prohibited foreign entity rules apply to taxable years that start after enactment, and for a company on a calendar year, that means 2026.
A storage project that breaks ground in 2026 has to show that at least 55% of the direct cost of its manufactured products and components comes from suppliers outside the prohibited list. For projects starting construction in 2030 or later, that share is 75%. Section 48E adds a 10-year clawback window too. If payments go out after the project is placed in service under an arrangement that hands a prohibited entity effective control, the credit can be recaptured.

The market moved before the rules took effect. According to Wood Mackenzie, a record number of projects began construction in late 2025 to secure the credit, which is part of why the firm withdrew its earlier forecast of a near-term contraction. Developers are also racing to safe harbor their pipelines and sign agreements with domestic manufacturers, while smaller developers face pressure to sell or to turn to Chinese suppliers.
American energy storage innovations developers are watching
Longer-duration lithium-ion systems
Utility-scale systems installed in Q2 averaged about 3.7 hours, up from roughly three hours in Q1. The Meta and Enbridge project is built for eight.
Fire safety designed in at the cell
As systems get larger and move closer to critical loads, how a fire is contained becomes a bigger part of the buying decision. TeraStor's P Series, for example, uses a parallel-before-series architecture that limits thermal runaway to the individual cell, in units of up to 8.2 MWh built for utility grids and AI data centers.
Supply chains built for FEOC compliance
With the threshold reaching 75% by 2030, supplier paperwork now matters to project finance. Taxpayers can rely on supplier certifications to show compliance, and suppliers who certify falsely face penalties, so certification belongs in vendor conversations from the first call.
Storage as the bridge for large new loads
Storage sited with or near a data center can deliver usable capacity while the grid connection is still being built. Wood Mackenzie points to this as one way hyperscalers get power sooner when grid connections are constrained.
What grid-scale battery storage growth means for 2027 projects
Wood Mackenzie has dropped its call for a near-term contraction. It now expects the utility-scale market to stagnate in 2026 and 2027, then grow at an average of 11% a year from 2028 through 2031. That is encouraging for the market, though it does little for a single 2027 project. A record number of projects started construction in late 2025 and locked in their credit early. A 2027 project gets no such head start, so whatever gets decided about suppliers over the next few months will make or break the credit.
Duration deserves the same early attention. A system sized at two hours may pencil out today and still lose a data center offtake to a four-hour bid. TeraStor's P Series and S Series cover both utility-scale and on-site data center projects.
Closing thoughts: The US grid-scale battery storage outlook for 2027
Energy storage still qualifies for the investment tax credit, but projects starting construction in 2026 must source at least 55% of their manufactured component costs from non-prohibited entities to claim it. Those rules pulled a wave of construction into late 2025. As a result, operating utility-scale battery capacity rose from 43.6 GW at the end of 2025 to nearly 52 GW by June 2026, according to the EIA, which expects 14 GW more by year end. Of this, longer durations lead. Utility-scale systems installed in Q2 2026 averaged roughly 3.7 hours based on Wood Mackenzie figures, and a Meta and Enbridge project is designed for eight. Going forward, as restriction on the FEOC content tighten for future ITC credits and energy storage is increasingly being coupled to future data center facilities, longer duration technologies, cell-level fire containment and FEOC-compliant supply chains are the key areas to watch.
